What do Jamaicans wear?
Although you will see vibrant coloured Hawaiian style clothing in Jamaican craft markets that tourists often visit, they are not typically the style locals wear. And while black is a popular shade for urban wear among Swiss residents; this is less so for Jamaicans, although that is changing with recent fashion trends. Linen, cotton, and other materials suited for tropical climates are first choices for daytime wear. But there are always exceptions, such as Rasta caps made with wool.
The Jamaican fashion industry is a growing sector that is drawing increasing attention in the Caribbean region and beyond. Fashion designers are redefining haute couture inspired by African and Western design traditions. https://www.experiencejamaique.com/blog/top-jamaican-menswear-designers
A variety of other factors influence Jamaicans’ dress choices, such as their religious persuasion, popular local and international artists, and trend setters, or personal aspirations. Uniforms are mandatory from kindergarten through to schools, college, and even workplaces. Therefore, just about every Jamaican has worn uniforms at some point in their lives. For many it is a convenient way to get through the day without having to think about what to wear. https://www.wonderopolis.org/wonder/why-do-some-people-wear-uniforms
School uniforms generally made of khaki for boys and simple designs in cotton for girls. Companies provide fashionably designed office wear for employees.
Here are a few images of what Jamaicans wear on various occasions – to school, to church, the office, Rasta style, high fashion day and evening wear for men and women, weddings, as well as accessories.
