The National Gallery of Jamaica (NGJ), which was established in 1974, is the oldest and largest public art museum in the Anglophone Caribbean. The NGJ also has an active exhibition programme that includes retrospectives of work by major Jamaican artists, thematic exhibitions, guest-curated exhibitions, touring exhibitions that originate outside of the island, and its flagship exhibition, the Kingston Biennial.
This year’s Biennial 2024-2025: Green X Gold is an exploration of land, environment, and ecology. The exhibition also critiques the Caribbean’s tourism-driven portrayal as a “paradise,” opened on December 15th, 2024, and continues till June 29th this year.
Curated by Ashley James, (Associate Curator, Guggenheim New York) and O’Neil Lawrence (Chief Curator, National Gallery of Jamaica), the Kingston Biennial 2024- 2025 showcases a varied mix of artists from Jamaica, the diaspora, and the wider Caribbean region. This diverse group reflects the region’s rich talent and multifaceted narratives through innovative and thought-provoking works.

The Kingston Biennial–formerly the Jamaica Biennial–is the NGJ’s flagship exhibition and has long been a cornerstone of Jamaica’s arts calendar. Beyond the art, the 2024 - 2025 Kingston Biennial is a platform for dialogue, discovery, and connection—a chance to see Jamaica and the Caribbean through a variety of lenses and to engage with issues shaping our region.
