A short history of NDTC
In 1962, dancer Eddie Thomas and scholar Rex Nettleford joined forces to form the National Dance Theatre Company of Jamaica (NDTC). Today the company is one of Jamaica’s renowned troupes and this year celebrates its growth and development with a full roster of events and activities under the theme “Reflection, Celebration and Continuity.’
An objective of the celebrations is to raise the company’s profile, both locally and internationally. The company hopes to reach new audiences, while holding the interest of their fan base. NDTC hopes to achieve this by mounting fresh, new works, maintaining the classic remounts with a renewed commitment to serving the ideals of its founders.
During the course of the year NDTC will be performing at various locations across the island. In March they will perform at the Brooklyn College in New York and later in the Cayman Islands and Belize. The annual ‘Morning of Music and Movement’, staged on Easter Sunday for over three decades, continues this year on April 16 at the Little Theatre in Kingston.
Continuity is a critical part of the NDTC mantra, so in May (Child Month) the company holds a workshop for children, introducing them to the rudiments of the craft. Come July and August is NDTC’s annual season of dance at the Little Theatre.
