Jamaica is very popular with Swiss guests
The Europe Director of the Jamaica Tourist Board welcomes the additional Edelweiss flight to Montego Bay—and shares compelling reasons to visit Jamaica.
The success of a Caribbean destination in European countries is very much dependent on attractive flight connections. At ITB Berlin, Gregory Shervington, the Jamaica Tourist Board's head of Europe, spoke very positively about the Swiss market in an interview with Travelnews, saying, «We are very pleased that Edelweiss will be adding a second weekly flight from October 2025. »
While the German market is still lagging behind the 2019 figures, Jamaica is now receiving a further boost in Switzerland. With around 5,000 Swiss visiting Jamaica in 2019, the second Edelweiss flight means a doubling of capacity from 3,500 to 7,000 seats. Edelweiss, which has been flying to Montego Bay since 2021, is now adding a Monday flight to its existing Thursday rotation.
«Edelweiss is banking on Jamaica's success in view of the recent increase in numbers», says Shervington, adding that Jamaica itself has invested a great deal. «We are opening numerous new hotels, including a number of smaller boutique hotels that are well received by Swiss guests. Some roads have been upgraded, making it even easier to explore Jamaica by rental car.» The highway has been expanded, particularly east of Kingston. Last year, 2,000 new hotel rooms were added, with another 6,000 planned over the next five years. Shervington highlights the stunning area around Port Antonio as a must-see for Caribbean enthusiasts.
Stable prices
Jamaica has traditionally been positioned in the higher-priced segment, offering a wide range of luxury accommodations. When asked about current prices and potential increases, Gregory Shervington states that prices have stabilized. Unlike other destinations, Jamaica has not become more expensive; rather, its prices have aligned with those of other locations.
«Many of our hotels have already invested in green technologies and have solar panels, eliminating the need for more expensive energy sources», says Gregory Shervington. He adds that this shift will positively impact Jamaica's tourism in the years ahead.
With its green mountainsides, crystal-clear rivers, white beaches and turquoise sea, Jamaica is an exciting place for travelers looking to recharge their batteries and relax. The additional Edelweiss connection makes it even easier for visitors to experience the diversity of the island's six vacation regions – Montego Bay, Negril, Ocho Rios, Kingston, Port Antonio and South Coast – with more flexibility in terms of time.
