A Day or Two in Hanover

A Day or Two in Hanover

Hanover is a parish at the western end of the island, named in 1723 after a British monarch from the German House of Hanover.  Here are a few places to visit in Hanover.

Tour Lucea

Start the tour in Lucea, Hanover’s capital.  If you are a history enthusiast you will find a few buildings that date back to the 1700s, such as Lucea Parish Church.  Also the Town Hall was built in 1820 and houses a clock tower with an interesting story.  Fort Charlotte is worth seeing.  In 1761 the fort was constructed to protect Lucea from French raiders. Today it provides breadth-taking views of the coastline.  Not far from the fort is the Hanover Museum, formerly part of the British Military Barracks and later a slave prison. It houses artifacts and exhibits related to the town’s history.  The museum is off the main road to Negril, between Watson Taylor Park and the Lucea Roman Catholic Church.

Blenheim is a small village outside of Lucea with historical links to Germany.  It is also the birthplace of Jamaica’s first Prime Minister and national hero, Sir Alexander Bustamante.  The house where he lived as a child is a museum dedicated to this remarkable man.

Go Rafting

On the Lethe River you can enjoy rafting in a tranquil atmosphere surrounded by nature. Experienced guides will show you interesting places along the way.  Give yourself a couple hours to enjoy the ride.  Alternatively you could relax at any of three water falls: Kempshot, Paradise and Dry Hill Falls.

Stay the night

There are several hotels in Hanover at a range of prices.  Most online booking agencies provide this information.  Lucea is not the liveliest place if you are looking for a night out.  But there are a couple places. The Grand Palladium Jamaica Resort and Spa (fiestahotelgroup.com) offers a casino, live performances and Boogie Woogie night club.
