Cruising through Falmouth

Cruising through Falmouth

If you are on a cruise ship touring the Caribbean and Jamaica is on the list of countries to visit, the town of Falmouth is likely to be the port of call.

As a youngster on summer holiday road trips, Falmouth was simply another small town to pass through before arriving at exciting Montego Bay.

In that time, it was not a major tourist location, although it is cradled between Ocho Rios and Montego Bay the traditional tourist hot spots.

Nonetheless in recent years Falmouth has been holding its own as a tourist destination, particularly among cruise trip visitors.

Here are a few more reasons why Falmouth is worth visiting.
-    It is one of the best-preserved towns of Georgian architecture in the Caribbean. The town square, post office and courthouse are just some of the buildings that were built during that era and well preserved today.  Take a heritage tour to see these buildings https://tourofjamaica.com/2018/02/13/falmouth-court-house-in-jamaica/

-     St. Peters Anglican Church (built in 1790) with its beautiful mahogany interior that has remained untouched since the mid-nineteenth century : https://falmouth.lib.virginia.edu/exhibits/show/falmouth/duke-street/st--peter-s-anglican-church

-    Some of Jamaica’s world well known sporting personalities, such as Usain Bolt and Veronica Campbell-Brown, were born and grew up in Falmouth.

-    An interesting phenomenon seen at nights called Glistening Waters, located where the Martha Brae River meetings the Caribbean Sea.  For the entire year, the water glows at night with bioluminescence micro-organisms that are perfectly harmless.  https://www.facebook.com/glisteningwatersja/
