A Cup of Cocoa Tea
An old breakfast tradition in Jamaica is a cup of homemade hot chocolate, locally called cocoa tea, with home grown cocoa.
In recent years the cocoa industry in Jamaica has been experiencing a regrowth with over 7000 cocoa farmers island wide. Although not a major producer by international standards, the island’s hilly terrain provides a perfect environment growing this crop.
Besides meeting local demands, cocoa is exported to Japan, France, the Netherlands, Switzerland and the USA. Nestle, which once produced cocoa based products in Jamaica, made cocoa beverages popular through their Milo and Ovaltine brand chocolate mixes.
While not quite the same as a homemade cocoa tea, they come reasonably close.
Here’s a quick recipe for cocoa tea.
Bring a small pot of water to boil and then add a couple chocolate balls (raw chocolate), cinnamon, pimento leaves, and a pinch of salt.
Boil on a low flame for fifteen to twenty minutes until the chocolate is completely melted and stir occasionally.
Remove from the flame and sweetened to taste with condensed milk or coconut milk and sugar; remove the cinnamon and pimento leaves. Pour into your favorite mug and enjoy!
