Lisa Hendricks

Born in Uganda, raised in Nigeria, and schooled in England, I am at home in Portland Jamaica.  There is not a time when I did not draw or paint or read. I created chalk worlds and pictures and maps all over the veranda outside of my bedroom in Nigeria as a child. My bookcase was the same height as me when I was sitting. My mother had filled it with beautifully illustrated story and poetry books, myths, legends and fables from all around the world.

Life’s journeying and my beautiful children brought me late to ‘formalising’ my art, completing a BA in Fine Art Painting at City and Guilds of London Art School, A PGCE from Greenwich University (Art Specialism) and an MA in Art in Education in my forties.

Home in the forested hills of Portland Jamaica, offers the space and solace to keep me gainfully occupied, this now so needed since my youngest son lost his life to knife crime in a place I now have the right to call Cruel Britannia. Portland is a place where I can plan and plant and breathe and reflect and paint and make and read and laugh and dance and cry. It is a flight path for birds and barefoot friends.

My need to paint and draw and find a way through image has not stopped, it has never been able to. It has helped me a find way to place myself in a world and a life that has truly been as if I am learning to walk again with a missing body part. I continue to work between worlds, and continents. Carrying only watercolours and gouache when I am required to live out of a suitcase, as has been the case during the processes of homicide.

Reaching for worlds I could not find, I have spent much time walking, finding images and light though a lens, returning to whoever’s home away from home is sheltering me, layering little painted things, finding textures in flat light dimension, working in digital forms until it settles, and I settle. Life really is a journey, we can only aim to capture fleeting moments of this journey and hold them for a while.

The Beautiful Ethereal Things of Earth that Connect Us to The Sun

These images are Giclee prints, they are compilations of light, glints and leaks, of paintings, textures, drawings and perceptions along the way as they continue to form the groundwork of a healing journey.
